Your Wish, Our Promise — My Prayer
This song was written after the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011.
I wrote this song in the days following that great disaster.
Maybe it was only a few days, maybe a few weeks.
I remember hearing the news — children from kindergartens and schools taken by the tsunami.
I couldn’t stop trembling.
It was unbearable to realize that something so cruel could happen so suddenly.
Those children were so young.
How frightened they must have been as the sea came closer.
How much they must have wanted to hold their parents’ hands.
If I could have, I would have taken their place.
Back then, I often thought there was no reason for me to live.
If I could have gone instead of them, that would have been enough.
I was filled with sorrow, anger, and helplessness.
Before I could even pray, “Rest in peace,” I kept asking myself—
Why did those children have to suffer like that?
What is God, really?
Who can carry the weight of such pain?
I also learned that we only believe we choose our own path.
In truth, we can never go against nature.
But none of that mattered to me.
I just wanted to hold their hands.
If their cold hands could be warm again…
I kept thinking about that, again and again.
I don’t believe this song can comfort anyone.
It’s only my confession, my small prayer for what I couldn’t do.
If there is another life, I want them to find happiness there.
And those of us who remain — we must keep living, even when it hurts, for their sake too.
“Your Wish, Our Promise” is my song of prayer for what has ended.
I’m sorry I couldn’t take your place.
May your souls rest gently, surrounded by light.
For all the children lost that day, and for those who still remember.
